He also appeared in The Killing, a drama series that was broadcast worldwide. Then, he appeared in Borgen III and Those Who Kill, two internationally highly acclaimed Danish drama series. He also played a major role in the BBC drama Sherlock as a blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. He was the president of Russia in House of Cards, an American television series. He was awarded an International Emmy Award in 2018 for his part in Danish television drama Herrens Veje, which was shown in the UK in 2019 under the name Ride in the Storm.In addition to his mother tongue Danish, Mikkelsen speaks fluent Swedish, German and English and has also mastered diverse accents. He claimed that he and his brother initially learned English by listening to and studying the Monty Python songs.
